You Had Better Learn Math in School If You Want to Own a Service Business When You Grow Up!

Mathematics are a must, stay in school and learn your math if you want to be successful in a small business of your own some day.

It is essential to learn mathematics, even if you are going to go into your own small business and become self-employed.
And even if you don't have a physical store where you have to worry about inventory, you still need to know math. Even if you're running a small service business, you still need to learn how to do job estimating, so you can bid out the job correctly, without losing money.
After all, you will have fixed costs for your work vehicle, insurance, uniforms, licenses, etc., as well as variable costs such as labor, materials, and all sorts of other incidentals. If you bid your jobs too cheap, you might get lots of business, but then you will go out of business and become broke or bankrupt.
Before retirement, I ran a franchising company, and our franchisees were the business of doing multiple types of cleaning, and many of them had contracts with Fortune 500 companies doing hot water pressure washing, power washing if you will. Some of them cleaned decks, and then put coatings and wood treatment on them, others cleaned concrete, and many cleaned the fleets of trucks. We even had a few who cleaned railcars, and heavy agricultural and construction equipment.
We also did government contracting cleaning fleets of vehicles, military aircraft, and power washing for the United States post office.
Now then, one of the simplest businesses you can run is a power washing business which cleans concrete.

Okay so, let's consider all the math that you need to know to do this, and why you cannot quit school until you understand it.
Now then, let's say you are bidding a job and it is a parking structure; 1.

-You have two power washing rigs, one can clean 2800 square feet per hour using a hydro-twister, and the other one can clean 1500 square feet per hour using a high-pressure wand with a 15-degree tip.
2.
-Your labor costs including healthcare insurance run $18 an hour, and it will take a minimum of two people to run the equipment, one on each rig.
3.

-The parking structure including all five levels that you will be cleaning is 600,000 square feet.
4.-Your competition has been did the job at $30,000.

5.
-Your power washing rigs' operating costs are $16 an hour each for fuel, and three dollars per hour in maintenance costs.
Luckily, they're both paid for. Now then, my question to you is; are you willing to bid the job at $28,000? Well, rather than give you the answer to this actually very simple math problem, I would rather use it as an example to explain to you why you need to know math, even if you are going to run your own small little service business.
Because if you are bidding jobs in the dark, and you don't realize what your real costs are, then how do you know if you're going to make any money? Indeed, I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Do me a favor, stay in school and study your math, you are going to need it no matter what you do in life.
